MISSOULA, MT - The Helena Brewers (7-8) took a lead in the sixth inning but couldn't hold off a wave of eight unanswered runs from the Missoula Osprey as they fell 12-5 in front of a record 4,919 fans at Ogren Park Allegiance Field on Monday night.
The Osprey (7-8) jumped out to a lead in the first inning when Kyle Smith doubled in a pair of runs, giving Missoula a 2-0 lead.
Helena found an answer in the third with several hard hit balls. Nick Roscetti started the inning with a double and was driven in when Chad McClanahan flew out to center field. Missoula center fielder Gabriel Marciel went crashing into the wall on the catch and Roscetti alertly tagged up and scored from second base when Maciel stayed down following the catch, cutting the Brewers deficit to 2-1. Two batters later, Payton Henry launched a solo home run to center field, his third of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.
Missoula responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, one on an RBI double by Eduardo Diaz and the other on an RBI groundout by Andy Yerzy, bringing home the second run to make it 4-2 in favor of the Osprey.
In the fifth, the Brewers used the long ball to tie the game again. With two outs, reigning Pioneer League Player of the Week Zach Clark singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error by Maciel. Jose Gomez stepped to the plate and hit his fourth home run of the series, a fly ball over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-4. Gomez finished the series 6-for-10 with four home runs and 11 RBI.
The Brewers took the lead one inning later. Helena put a pair of men on base with a single and a walk, and Dallas Carroll moved them into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Gabriel Garcia followed with a single up the middle, bringing in a run to make it 5-4. Garcia finished the night 3-for-5 with an RBI, extending his on-base streak to 13 games.
The Osprey generated a run to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Dominic Miroglio single to left. Even though the Brewers were able to escape the sixth without allowing another run, the Osprey bats continued the charge in the seventh. Missoula used four singles, a walk and an error by McClanahan to score four runs, taking an 8-5 lead. Missoula added another three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
The Brewers return to action on Tuesday afternoon at 4:05 PM as they start a two-game series on the road against the Billings Mustangs. Helena sends RHP Carlos Herrera (1-0, 3.94) to the bump against Mustangs LHP Max Wotell (0-2, 10.13). The game can be heard locally on KCAP 95.9 FM/AM 950, TuneIn Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app.
