Brilló en los diamantes de Grandes Ligas durante 10 temporadas (1995-2004). A lo largo de su trayectoria estuvo en 28 equipos, al tomar en cuenta MLB, Ligas Menores, Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, Liga Mexicana del Pacífico, Liga Japonesa y Liga Coreana.
En el circuito coreano (KBO), Karim García acumuló 103 cuadrangulares, 339 carreras producidas, 250 anotadas y un porcentaje de bateo de .264 en cuatro campañas (2008-2011). En su primer año con los Gigantes de Lotte sumó 30 vuelacercas, lo que le permitió convertirse en el mexicano con más jonrones en una temporada de la pelota coreana. Esa marca fue superada por Roberto Ramos de los LG Twins este 2020 (con 35 hasta el 23 de septiembre).
El extoletero de los Yankees de Nueva York y Dodgers de Los Angeles disfruta del éxito de Ramos.
“Me da mucho gusto que un sonorense ponga el nombre de México en alto y que se abran las puertas para más compañeros que no estén en Grandes Ligas: poder jugar en Asia y hacerlo bien, a un nivel al que pocos han llegado”, comentó el oriundo de Ciudad Obregón, y añadió que le gustaría poder felicitar a Roberto Ramos por lo que está logrando en el país asiático.
Al recordar su paso por Corea del Sur, Karim García compartió que el idioma no fue una barrera, debido a que tienen traductores no solo para los juegos y comunicarse con los compañeros, sino para la vida cotidiana. Lejos de casa y con una carga menos; sin embargo, sí hay tradiciones distintas con un impacto cultural, como la comida.
“Tienen restaurantes que puedes ver los peces, almejas y camarones que te vas a comer. Un día comí el pulpo vivo. Le quitan la tinta, te lo comes con salsa de aceite de ajonjolí y al masticarlo se te pegan los tentáculos por dentro de los cachetes. Es simpática la comida, pero la verdad sí me gustó”, dijo el líder de carreras producidas (111) de la KBO en 2008.
En el modo de ver el beisbol también es distinto. El otrora jardinero considera que en la península asiática buscan a lanzadores de gran velocidad: abridores que lancen de 95 a 98 millas por hora y cerradores de 98 a 100. Lo mismo con los bateadores: que puedan tener de 25 a 30 vuelacercas por campaña.
“Es bastante rápido. Es un juego diferente al que estamos acostumbrados. Tocan mucho la bola, inclusive con un out tocan mucho para mover al corredor. Creen que el bateador de atrás siempre tiene la posibilidad de pegar un hit. Tienen mentalidad diferente”, mencionó Karim, quien además de tres temporadas con los Gigantes de Lotte, estuvo una más con las Águilas de Hanwha.
Con tanta experiencia alrededor del mundo, Karim García detectó diferencias entre las aficiones de Estados Unidos, México y Corea del Sur.
“El mexicano es muy alegre, grita mucho, es muy ruidoso. El estadounidense es más tranquilo. El coreano se la pasa cantando todo el juego cuando su equipo está a la ofensiva. Cada pelotero tiene una canción, tipo himno. Además, es gente muy educada: en la séptima entrada en Estados Unidos cantan ‘Take me out to the ball game’ y en Corea les dan una bolsita para que empiecen a recoger su basura y cuando acaba el juego está completamente limpio”, dijo Karim García al recordar la manera en que se comportan en cada latitud.
