English’s RBI Single Walks It Off For Amarillo

*Amarillo, Texas - *Tristin English walked off the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to elevate the Sod Poodles (59-61) to a 5-4 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders (64-56) on Tuesday night.

Both squads collected eight hits as Amarillo (27-24) closed the gap in the Texas League second-half standings to just one game (Frisco is 28-23).

Starting pitchers Blake Walston and Jack Leiter traded scoreless 1st innings before the RoughRiders jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the 2nd. Back-to-back one-out doubles scored one and a two-out double followed by a single made it 3-0.

Amarillo got their first hit in the 2nd and scored their first run in the 3rd. Juan Centeno and Jorge Barrosa singled with one out to put runners at the corners, and Jordan Lawlar put the Soddies on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice. It was his first career Double-A RBI.

After allowing four hits and three doubles in the 2nd, Walston set down 10 RoughRiders in a row through the 5th inning. He only picked up one strikeout in that span, but strong defense stifled the Frisco offense.

Walston retired his 11th batter in a row to begin the 6th, but a one-out solo home run made it 4-1, Frisco. He allowed two more singles before a 6-4-3 double-play ended the inning. Arizona’s No. 5 prospect had a back-and-forth day with four perfect innings and two with multiple hits.

Centeno picked up his second single of the game in the bottom of the 5th, but Amarillo went scoreless. Leiter rolled through the first five frames with just four hits allowed, but the Amarillo offense began to click in the bottom of the 6th.

Leandro Cedeño led off the frame with a walk and back-to-back singles from Tristin English and Blaze Alexander loaded the bases with no outs. That ended the night for Leiter, who was relieved after 91 pitches. The first out of the inning was recorded on an infield fly rule and Amarillo scored one on a sacrifice fly from Roby Enriquez. The inning ended with the bases loaded.

Walston came back out for the 7th inning with the Soddies trailing 4-2. He retired the first two batters before a two-out walk ended his night at 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, and 3 K. He was relieved by Justin Lewis, who ended the inning on a three-pitch strikeout. Amarillo went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Brent Teller relieved Lewis to kick off the 8th. Frisco led off with a single and the runner advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, but Teller retired the side for a scoreless frame.

Amarillo tied the game with two runs in the bottom of 8th. After the first two batters struck out, Eduardo Diaz walked and reached 2nd on a wild pitch. Roby Enriquez was then hit by a pitch on a 1-0 count to put two on. With both runners in motion, Tim Tawa lifted a high fly ball into shallow right field and confusion among the Frisco defenders allowed the ball the drop fair. Diaz and Enriquez both scored with the head start to tie it, 4-4.

Blake Rogers took over in the top of the 9th and successfully sent Amarillo into walk-off territory with a scoreless inning. He struck out the first two batters and walked the third, but the inning ended on a warning-track flyout to left field.

The Sod Poodles capitalized in the bottom of the inning and walked off the RoughRiders to secure the series-opening win. Barrosa led off the inning with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Cedeño was then intentionally walked to bring up Tristin English. He smoked a 1-0 pitch into left field and scored the speedy Barrosa, ending the game with a 5-4 victory.

English, Alexander, and Centeno led the way with two hits apiece for Amarillo, and Tawa’s two RBI topped the team. Tonight was Amarillo’s fifth walk-off win of the year and their first since July 12 against San Antonio.

Now trailing the first-place RoughRiders by just one game in the second-half standings, Amarillo will turn to RHP Ross Carver in game two tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 31, with first pitch at 6:05 PM.

Tristin Walks It Off: 1B Tristin English cracked a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with the win. It was Amarillo's fifth walk-off vicory of the year, and their first since July 12 against San Antonio. English turned in a 2-for-5 performance tonight, with no hit bigger than his game-winner.

*On The BoAArd: *SS Jordan Lawlar plated Amarillo’s first run of the game with an RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the 3rd, his first career Double-A RBI. Arizona’s No. 3 prospect went 6-for-23 with six runs scored in his debut series against the Corpus Christi Hooks last week and went 0-for-5 tonight in his HODGETOWN debut. The former No. 6 overall pick has been as good as advertised in his first full minor league season, now batting .319 with 52 RBI, 18 doubles, 12 home runs, seven triples and 37 steals through 86 games across three levels.

Tie-mmy Two-wa: 2B Tim Tawa tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with a two-run double. He blooped a 2-1 pitch into shallow right field that dropped in between three Frisco defenders, scoring both runners to tie the game at four. He finished the contest with just one hit, and is batting .186 with 17 RBI.

Wlake Wodgers: RHP Blake Rogers struck out two in a scoreless 9th inning tonight to send the Sod Poodles into walk-off territory. English rewarded him with the win, giving him four on the year. The longest-tenured Sod Poodle in franchise history is 4-4 with a 3.64 ERA and 12 saves in 41 appearances this season.

Up And Down: LHP Blake Walston allowed four hits and three runs in the top of the 2nd, but that frame was the only blemish on his final line tonight. After the early action, he retired 11 RoughRiders in a row before they scored again off three hits in the 6th. He finished with four perfect innings and two with multiple hits, and he retired two batters in the 7th to secure his second-longest outing of the season (6.2 IP). His four earned runs snapped a streak of six straight starts with two or fewer runs allowed, and the no-decision snapped a streak of three straight wins decisions.

Standings Update: With the win, Amarillo (27-24) is one game back in the Texas League South second-half standings. Frisco (28-23) entered the series tied with the Midland RockHounds (28-22) for first place in the second-half, and they remained tied with losses tonight. The Sod Poodles are 5-2 against the RoughRiders at home this year, and have a chance to claim a share of first place with a win tomorrow night.
