Through the first five games of their homestand … a total of 45 innings … the RockHounds had played errorless baseball. Just seven batters into Sunday's series finale with Amarillo, the 'Hounds had committed three errors and the Sod Poodles led, 2-0, on the strength of two unearned runs. Amarillo went on to a 4-2 win, breaking a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth, Sunday afternoon at Security Bank Ballpark.
Luis Barrera's RBI single in the third cut the Amarillo lead in half and the 'Hounds tied the game in the sixth, putting runners at the corner with no outs before settling for a single run which scored on a double play.
In the Amarillo ninth, Brad Zunica drew a leadoff walk and Webster Rivas followed with a single (a would-be double on a line drive to the left side that Nate Mondou knocked down). John Gorman got the next two outs before Rodrigo Orozco singled to right, scoring Chris Baker (who had reached on a fielder's choice) and Greg Deichmann misplayed the ball, allowing a second run to score.
Sod Poodles left-hander Travis Radke was brilliant in relief, facing and retiring nine batters over the last three innings.
The box score tells the story - - the RockHounds committed four errors (their only miscues of the six-game homestand) and three of Amarillo's four runs were unearned.
Notable
Corpus Christi swept a Sunday double-header at Frisco, putting the South Division into a virtual three-way tie at the top. Amarillo (28-26) is now tied with Frisco (29-27) with the Hooks (28-27) just a half-game back (the RockHounds, 25-30, trail by three-and-a-half games).
Note: If the clubs play their remaining 15 scheduled games (no rainouts) and if Amarillo and Frisco are tied in the "GB" column, the Sod Poodles would win the division, due to a higher winning percentage (Amarillo will play 68 games in the half and Frisco 70).
Frisco travels to Amarillo Monday to open a critical three-game series while the Hooks host the RockHounds in a three-gamer.
Amarillo took its third consecutive series (2-1) from the RockHounds. The Sod Poodles took 2-of-3 (May 13-15) and swept a four-gamer (May 23-26) at Amarillo. The 'Hounds took 2-of-3 (April 8-10) at Amarillo and swept the previous series (3-0) at Rocky Town (April 15-17).
The Sod Poodles lead the "Oil-Pan Series" (head-to-head series … "Oil" for the Permian Basin and "Pan" for the Panhandle) 9-games-to-7. The teams meet four times in the second half, with three of the series at Security Bank Ballpark).
After his first at-bat Friday, Luis Barrera was 2-for-23. He is now 8-for-11 since with three doubles, three runs and three RBI (plus a walk, on base in 9-of-12 trips). He went 2-for-4 Sunday with an RBI and a stolen base.
After hitting .167 in 17 games to open the season, Brallan Perez is 9-for-20 (.450) in six games since returning from Single-A. His nine hits include two doubles, a triple and a home run (six runs, two RBI and two stolen bases).
Mikey White lost a seven-game hit streak (0-for-3, walk) but reached base for the eighth straight game (.281) and has reached base in 28-of-his-last-29 (.274). Mikey is hitting .302 in his last 21 games with 17 runs and 17 RBI (nine doubles and four HR).
Jonah Heim went 0-for-4 Sunday, snapping an 11-game on-base streak (he is hitting .310 with a .431 OBP in his last 12 games).
Nate Mondou went 2-for-4 Sunday, snapping an 0-for-17 slump.
