Zack Erwin had yet another strong start, but a lack of run support and a late sacrifice fly for Cedar Rapids was the difference in Friday's 2-1 loss for the Snappers. Beloit has now lost 11 of their last 14 games and have not recorded a hit with runners in scoring position in four straight games.
Erwin's 6 2/3 innings are the deepest into a ballgame he has gotten this season with just one of his two runs allowed being earned. The first overall pick in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, Royce Lewis, doubled home the Kernels' first run of the ballgame in the third. A throwing error by J.C. Rodriguez started the seventh inning to get Caleb Hamilton to first base. Shane Carrier doubled Hamilton to third base who would score on a two-out sacrifice fly by Trey Cabbage.
The Snappers scored first in their first meeting with the Kernels since the opening weekend of the season. Edwin Diaz led off the third with a walk and Rodriguez doubled him over to third with one out then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mike Martin. Martin reached third on a single by Josh Vidales.   The Snappers did not have another runner in scoring position until stranding the tying run at third base in the eighth and ninth innings.
