Espinal, Gerber power Mud Hens to victory

Toledo added to its lead with another run in the top of the fourth. Lugo tripled down the right-field line to start the frame, and scored when Stewart ripped a sharp line drive into right to give the Mud Hens a 2-0 advantage.

The IronPigs looked to respond in the bottom of the ninth, with Trevor Plouffe drawing a one-out walk to bring the potential tying run to the plate. However, the rally quickly fizzled out as Cowgill grounded into a 4-3 double play to close out the series opener.

The Mud Hens remain in Pennsylvania on Saturday to continue their three-game set against Lehigh Valley. First pitch from Coca-Cola Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
