HARTFORD- Evan Grills turned in his best outing as a Yard Goat and Hartford reached the .500 mark (37-37) for the first time since May 29 with a 5-0 shutout of the Richmond Flying Squirrels Monday night, before 6,093. It was the 21st sellout crowd of the season at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Richmond (38-36) left 13 runners on base and was 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Grills, attempting to come back from Tommy John surgery, tossed six shutout innings, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out three. The native of Canada pitched with runners on base in every inning but the first, but managed to pitch out of trouble, as the southpaw stranded eight Richmond base runners. Sean Nolin, Logan Cozart and Matt Pierpont came out of the Hartford bullpen to pitch the last three innings
Hartford's five runs scored without benefit of a hit, on two sacrifice flies, a bases loaded walk, an error and a passed ball. Mylz Jones, Sam Hilliard and Omar Carrizales each had two hits for the Yard Goats. CJ Hinojosa and Dylan Davis each had two hits for the San Francisco Giants affiliate.
Former Boston Red Sox farmhand Shaun Anderson suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Ryan Castellani will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Jordan Johnson for Richmond. The game will be televised on Vantage Sportsnet, broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio1410.iheart.com and MiLB.com.
