Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes third baseman Evan Mendoza has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of July 24-30.
Mendoza earned the honors after going 13-for-26 (.500) at the plate with five doubles and a triple over the course of the week. The Sarasota, FL native became the third Spike with a four-hit game this season when he accomplished the feat on Thursday against Batavia, and added two more three-hit games during the week. Mendoza now has seven games of three hits or more in his debut professional season.

The Cardinals' 11th-round draft choice in 2016 out of N.C. State, Mendoza is now second in the NYPL in batting average with a .350 mark, and his 12 doubles are tied for the league lead. Mendoza has also produced a home run and 19 RBI over 31 games with the Spikes through July 30.
Mendoza is the first Spike to be named NYPL Player of the Week since R.J. Dennard copped the honor for the last week of the 2015 season. Steven Farinaro , now Mendoza's teammate on the Spikes, was the last State College player to win an NYPL weekly award when he was named Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 15-21, 2016.
Spikes fans can catch Mendoza and the rest of the club in action Monday and Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals).
The fun continues with Monday Buck Night, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ. Fans can get into the park with $1 Outfield Bleacher seats, then enjoy $1 hot dogs, $1 small sodas and $1 peanut boats throughout the game.
The homestand concludes on Tuesday with the annual Super Splash Day game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as Ike's Kids Zone turns into the Splash Zone for kids of all ages. First pitch between the Spikes and Doubledays will be at noon, and fans can enjoy another $2 Walking Taco Tuesday, presented by B94.5.
Kids will also have the opportunity to run the bases after Tuesday's game thanks to Wonderland Charter Schools.
