Ferrara’s Two Hits, Three Runs Pace Offense in 7-4 Loss

LAKELAND, FL – Matthew Ferrara scored all three times he reached base, but the Clearwater Threshers (69-54, 29-28) surrendered six runs in the middle innings and fell 7-4 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (61-61, 30-27) at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Threshers have Monday off before returning home to begin their final home series of the regular season on Tuesday night.

After a scoreless and hitless first frame from both teams, Nolan Beltran reached on an error with two outs in the top of the second inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Lakeland starter Kelvis Salcedo before a two-out single by Cade Climie drove him home for the game’s first run. Lakeland tied the game on a pair of hits in the home half of the second to even the score at one apiece.

With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Matthew Ferrara worked the count full and stole second when Beltran got to the plate. Beltran singled Ferrara to third before a sacrifice fly from Climie gave the Threshers a one-run advantage. Lakeland tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout to even the score at two. The Flying Tigers took their first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 4-2. Ferrara reached in the top of the sixth with an infield single off Owen Hall. He stole second base and scored on a Beltran RBI double to cut the deficit in half. Lakeland answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to four runs after six innings.

Ferrara led off the eighth inning with a walk, and Will Vierling drove him in with a two-out double to cut the deficit to three runs. Jack Hopko reached on a walk in the ninth, but the Threshers couldn’t complete the comeback in a 7-4 loss in Lakeland.

Yordanis Guerra surrendered one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 3.0 innings of a no-decision. Kobe Minchey walked two and allowed one run in 1.0 inning. Tyler Bowen (4-2) gave up two runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in 0.2 innings to take the loss. Luis Avila got the final out of the bottom of the fifth inning. Kyler Carmack let up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of relief. Richie Cortese struck out five batters in 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings
