Fightin Phils Hold Off Patriots Surge For Win

Reading, Pennsylvania - The Reading Fightin Phils (4-1, 33-41) defeated the Somerset Patriots (1-4, 45-29) by a score of 9-6 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Rodolfo Duran’s RBI single up the middle scored Anthony Volpe to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead in the first.

Reading answered in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. The first run came home on a wild pitch followed by sacrifice flies by Aldrem Corredor and Wendell Rijo for a 3-1 advantage.

The Fightins extended the lead in the third on a bases loaded walk by Jack Conley and an RBI single by Kevin Vicuna in which another run scored on an error to make it a 6-1 game.

Back-to-back home runs by Chad Bell (10) and Michael Beltre (4), and a bases loaded hit by pitch of Duran, cut the lead to 6-4. It was the third straight game in which Bell went deep.

Beltre struck again in the seventh with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-5.

Bases loaded walks to Rijo and Conley, as well as a hit by pitch of Vicuna, gave Reading a four-run lead in the seventh.

Volpe (11) crushed a solo home run in the eighth for the 9-6 final.

Jack Perkins (2-3) got the win with three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Luis Medina (2-3) suffered the loss after he allowed six runs (five earned) on two hits in 2.2 innings pitched. JoJo Romero (2) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
