COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies were sweapt in a doubleheader at SRP Park in Augusta Thursday night, losing game one 6-4 and dropping game two 4-0. The two losses brings the Fireflies losing streak to nine consecutive losses.

Game One

Columbia was unable to overcome an early deficit as they fell 6-4 to the Augusta GreenJackets in game one of the double header.

Adrian Alcantara (L, 5-9) had a rough outing. The righty only lasted a pair of innings and was on the hook for all six runs, allowing three in the first and three in the second frame. After Alcantara, Chase Wallace and Chih-Ting Wang combined to keep the GreenJackets off the books the rest of the way. Wallace allowed a pair of hits in three scoreless innings and Wang worked a 1-2-3 sixth with a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.

The bats woke up late and almost fought their way back into the game. It started with Darryl Collins’ fifth homer of the season to make it 6-1 in the fourth. Dillan Shrum hopped on the scoreboard next, scoring Enrique Valdez in the fifth with a two-run bomb to get the Fireflies within three. Saul Garza was feet away from the Fireflies third blast of the game when he doubled off the wall in the sixth to score Collins to make the score 6-4.

Columbia began the seventh with a Dillan Shrum walk that brought the tying run to the plate, but were unable to force extras in game one of the twin bill.

Game Two

Augusta scored quickly again in game two. The Fireflies fell 4-0 to complete the sweep.

Aided by an error, the GreenJackets were able to scratch across one, unearned run against Luinder Avila (L, 2-3) in the second after Christian Robinson slapped a two-out single up the middle to score Braulio Vasquez.

Avila would work his way through the fifth without giving up an earned run for the Fireflies, but he didn’t receive any run support as the Fireflies were left scoreless for the 11th time this season.

Herard Gonzalez got the first hit for the Fireflies when he served a single to left with no outs in the seventh and final inning of the game.

The GreenJackets added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth after Patrick Halligan loaded up the bases for Augusta. Willie Carter singled to score Tyler Tolve and Justyn-Henry Malloy to put Augusta up 3-0.

The Fireflies continue their series with the Augusta GreenJackets tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm at SRP Park. Southpaw Tyson Guerrero (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will toe the rubber for Columbia while RHP Jared Johnson (0-5, 7.04 ERA) will counter for Augusta.

Columbia has one homestand remaining in the 2021 campaign from August 14-19. There’s plenty of fun in store, including a Miller Lite $2 Tuesday, White Claw Wednesday Day and Bud Light Thirsty Thursday. In addition to the drink specials, the Fireflies will pull out all the stops for their promotions, hosting Grateful Dead Night Friday and Wands and Wizards Night Saturday.
