Peoria can't hold 5-2 lead in road trip opener

Dayton, OH - The Peoria Chiefs took a three-run lead into the sixth inning before allowing five runs in an 8-5 loss to the Dayton Dragons in the opener of a six-game road trip. The loss drops the Chiefs to 15-11 in the second half and 45-50 overall.
     Dayton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Chiefs starter Evan Kruczynski. Bruce Yari drew a leadoff walk and John Sansone hit his 11th home run of the season to put the hosts on top. 

  The Chiefs bounced back in the third against Andrew Jordan. Matt Fiedler singled and moved to third when Mick Fennell singled. A throwing error on a pickoff by Jordan brought home Fiedler to put the Chiefs on the board. Stefan Trosclair was hit by a pitch with one out and Vince Jackson reached on an error as Fennell scored to tie the game. With runners on the corners, Ryan McCarvel put the Chiefs on top 3-2 with a RBI groundout.
    Peoria extended the lead and knocked Jordan from the game in the fourth inning. Danny Hudzina walked and scored when Dylan Carlson doubled to the wall in right-center. Carlson moved to third on a groundout and scored on a double to right by Fennell to put the Chiefs up 5-2.
     Kruczynski cruised through the next two innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. Taylor Trammell led off with a bunt single and went to third when Kruczynski threw wild past first base. Yari singled to center to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3 and Sansone singled to right to put two on base. Ronnie Williams took over on the mound and Cassidy Brown cut the Chiefs lead to 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to left. Former Cardinals minor leaguer Malik Collymore was hit by a pitch and Hector Vargas tied the game with a single to left. Gabriel Ovalle put the Dragons on top 6-5 with a single to right and Jose Siri made it 7-5 with a double to left. The Dragons capped the scoring in the seventh when Yari hit a solo homer to left-center off Williams for an 8-5 lead.
     Kruczynski faced three batters in the sixth inning in a no-decision. He allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings while striking out three. Williams (3-6) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over two innings while striking out one. Eric Carter allowed a walk and struck out a batter in one hitless and shutout inning.
Notes… Stefan Trosclair's four-game hit streak ended though he drew his team-leading 39th walk and was hit by a pitch for the eighth time…The Chiefs are 1-5 on the road against the East this season and 7-11 overall…The Chiefs 2-15-1 in the East the last two seasons…The Chiefs are 60-37 all-time against the Dragons with the .619 win percentage the best against any MWL franchise…Peoria us 27-23 all-time at Fifth Third Field which opened in 2000…Dayton manager Luis Bolivar was ejected in the third inning for arguing a play at third base…Carter has not allowed a run in the second half of the season…Williams was charged with his first blown save of the season…Brian O'Keefe moved into 12th on the Chiefs career at-bat list with 749…The Chiefs allowed two homers and have given up 81 on the season which is the 13th most in team history…Peoria pitchers also hit two more batters for a MWL leading 78 and tied for the seventh most in team history…The Chiefs are 24-9 when scoring five runs or more but 8-32 when allowing at least five…The series continues Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET as the Chiefs send RH Frederis Parra (1-3, 2.84) to the mound against Dragons RH Matt Blandino (1-2, 4.12)… The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pregame show at 5:45 p.m. CT on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android… The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Radio Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
