Wilmer Font allowed three hits and struck out eight batters in seven innings as the Oklahoma City Dodgers shut out the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Monday night, 2-0.
The 'Cakes were shut out for the 12th time, tied with Nashville for the most in the Pacific Coast League.
Former Tulane standout Rob Segedin led off the third inning with a home run to get Oklahoma City on the board.
Named the PCL's Right-Handed Pitcher of the Year earlier in the day, Font (10-8) gave up one hit in the first five innings and was not threatened until the sixth, when back-to-back singles by Steve Lombardozzi and Christian Colón and an error by Edwin Rios loaded the bases with one out. But Font struck out Cal Towey and induced an inning-ending ground out from Ramón Cabrera to preserve the Dodgers' 1-0 lead.
Baby Cakes starter Scott Copeland recorded the sixth quality start in his last seven outings by keeping Oklahoma City scoreless after Segedin's home run. Copeland (9-11) gave up five hits in seven innings, walked two and struck out two.
He was relieved by Severino Gonalez in the eighth, and the Dodgers tacked on an insurance run courtesy of a pinch-hit RBI single by Tim Locastro.
Yasiel Sierra and Jordan Jankowski combined to pitch the final three innings to finish off the three-hitter, with Jankowski earning his 11th save and his first since being acquired from the Astros.
The Baby Cakes continue their final road trip of the season on Tuesday with the second of four games against the Dodgers. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
