Nolan Fontana hit his second inside-the-park home run of the season as the Salt Lake Bees won their second straight game against the Reno Aces, 9-3, Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
The Bees led 6-3 in the seventh inning when Fontana laced a sinking liner past diving Reno center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker and raced home behind Rey Navarro and Matt Williams. Fontana, who also collected an inside-the-park homer May 13 against Iowa, is the third player in Bees history with two inside-the-park homers in a single season, joining Peter Bourjos (2010) and Jeremy Moore (2011). Fontana was one of five Bees to record a multi-hit game. César Puello matched a season-high with four RBIs, collected his third straight multi-hit game, and homered for the second consecutive night.
Luis Diaz (3-4) earned his second consecutive victory, working five innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six. Diaz did not allow a hit after the first inning and struck out the last three batters he faced. Jason Gurka relieved Diaz and worked a scoreless sixth, Eduardo Paredes threw two perfect relief innings, and Brooks Pounders pitched a clean ninth to preserve the victory.
With the win, Salt Lake moves ten games over .500 for the first time since 2013. The Bees and Aces continue their series Wednesday at Smith's Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. For tickets and additional information, visit slbees.com
