The Buffalo Bisons organization is saddened to learn of the passing of former Herd pitcher, JOHN HOPE. Hope died this past week at the age of 47.
Hope played in parts of two seasons with the Bisons, 1993-1994, while the club was affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The former 2nd round draft pick made his Triple-A debut with the Herd in 1993 with a 2-1 record and a 6.33 ERA in four starts. He returns a season later and went 4-9 with a 5.04 ERA in 18 games/17 starts, striking out 54 in 100.0 innings of work. On August 6, 1994, Hope hit a home run off Indianapolis pitcher Matt Grott and held the distinction of being the only Bisons pitcher in the modern era to have hit a home run for nearly two decades. That record held until April of 2012 when Herd pitchers Dylan Owen and Matt Harvey hit home runs two days apart.
Hope appeared in 24 career big league games, all of them with the Pirates from 1993-1996. He had a lifetime record of 1-5 with 5.99 ERA in 73.2 innings of work.
