OKLAHOMA CITY - Four Oklahoma City Dodgers have been named Pacific Coast League All-Stars and will participate in the 2017 CHI Franciscan Health Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 12 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
Three of the four players have been elected by a vote of league field managers, general managers and broadcasters/media: second baseman Willie Calhoun , outfielder Alex Verdugo and starting pitcher Wilmer Font . Relief pitcher Madison Younginer was named a reserve by the PCL. The Dodgers are tied with the Reno Aces for the most representatives on the PCL All-Star roster.
Calhoun has 17 hit home runs, which is currently tied for third in the PCL. He currently ranks fourth in the league with 157 total bases and sixth with a .571 slugging percentage, Since June 8, Calhoun has racked up 24 RBI, which is most in all of the Minor Leagues. A native of Vallejo, Calif., Calhoun, 22, was drafted by the Dodgers in fourth round in 2015 from Yavapai College (Ariz.).
Font has been a key piece of the Dodgers' rotation, leading all of the Minor Leagues with 112 strikeouts. He also paces the PCL with 12.55 strikeouts per nine innings, while ranking among league leaders with a 1.08 WHIP (2nd), .212 opponent average (2nd) and a 3.70 ERA (6th). Font racked up a team-record 15 strikeouts May 15 against Sacramento at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, marking the most strikeouts in a single game by an OKC pitcher since the team rejoined the PCL in 1998. The 27-year-old Venezuelan signed with the Dodgers as a free agent in December 2016.
Widely considered the best prospect among position players in the Los Angeles Dodgers' fam system, Verdugo leads the OKC Dodgers with 88 hits and a .342 batting average this season, both of which rank fifth in the PCL. He is currently in the midst of a career-best 17-game hitting streak, which is the longest by an Oklahoma City player since 2014. The 21-year-old has more walks (30) than strikeouts (27) this season and, his .411 on-base percentage ranks fourth in the league, The Dodgers' 2014 second round pick from Tucson, Ariz. leads the Dodgers with 25 multi-hit games.
Younginer, 26, ranks among the league's top relievers this season, posting a 2.19 ERA with six saves. His .168 opponent average ranks first among PCL relievers, as does his 7.79 baserunners per nine innings, while his 11.69 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fourth. Younginer signed with the Dodgers as a free agent November 2016.
The 30th annual Triple-A All-Star Game will be broadcast live on MLB Network, the American Forces Network, MiLB.TV, the MiLB First Pitch App and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network at 8 p.m. Central time. The game will be carried locally on AM 1340 "The Game."
The Dodgers are currently on the road through July 3. The Dodgers will return home with an Independence Day Celebration at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 against the Iowa Cubs.
