TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Tarpons (14-10) collected a season-high 16 hits, including three home runs, in a 9-5 win to claim the series, three games to one, over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (11-13) on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa has now won seven of its last eight games.
The Tarpons got off to a hot start with four hits off Charlotte starter Brandon Lawson in the first inning. Singles by Thairo Estrada , Clint Frazier and Adam Lind loaded the bases with one out and Brandon Wagner delivered a two-run single into left.
RHP Albert Abreu came off the disabled list to make the start in his season debut. The 22-year-old began spring training late after undergoing an emergency appendectomy in February.
After retiring the first five batters he faced, Abreu allowed a home run to David Rodríguez in the second. That proved to be the only run let up by Abreu, who held the Stone Crabs to two hits in three and two-third innings. The righty tallied three strikeouts while issuing no walks and threw 40 of 61 pitches for strikes.
Adonis Rosa relieved Abreu in the fourth and Charlotte took the lead with three-straight two-out hits, including a two-run double by Rodriguez. Isiah Gilliam tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer over the wall in right.
Frazier gave Tampa back the lead by blasting a solo home run to right-center. Florial followed with a single and then scored when Lind greeted reliever Adrian Navas with a two-run blast to right. Wagner then doubled and scored on a two-out single by Diego Castillo , giving the Tarpons a 7-3 lead.
Jesús Sánchez singled to begin the seventh and later scored on a two-out hit by Peter Maris, cutting the lead to three.
Tampa responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Singles by Florial and Lind and a walk by Wagner loaded the bases with no outs. Gilliam singled home Florial and Lind scored when Castillo rolled into a 6-4-3 double play.
Charlotte tacked on a run with an RBI single by Lucius Fox in the ninth, but Rosa stranded a pair to finish the game. Rosa (W, 3-1) allowed four earned runs on 12 hits in five and a third relief innings, walking one while striking out five.
Lawson (L, 0-3) permitted five earned runs on nine hits in four and a third, striking out four while not allowing a walk. The right-hander threw 60 of 93 pitches for strikes.
Frazier (2-for-4, HR, HBP, RBI, 2R) logged his first multi-hit game of his rehab stint and is now batting .200 (3-for-15) after four games. Lind (3-for-5, HR, 2RBI, 2R) is batting .588 (10-for-17) with 6RBI in five games with the Tarpons. Florial (3-for-5, 2R), Wagner (2-for-3, 2B, BB, 2RBI, R), Gilliam (2-for-4, HR, 2RBI, R) and Castillo (2-for-4, R) also had multi-hit games for Tampa..
