The Fresno Grizzlies (71-58) soared past the Reno Aces (72-57) in a 16-2 victory on Monday night. The Grizzlies held the Aces to just two runs in the first inning to tie the season series 8-8 with a series finale remaining to secure the tiebreaker. Fresno matched and broke multiple 2017 individual batting highs with their largest margin of victory for the second time this season. The Grizzlies defeated the Las Vegas 51s by 14 runs, 22-8, on July 17.
The Grizzlies jumped out in front to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame. Preston Tucker notched his club-leading 89th RBI with a two-run double before he scored on a bases loaded walk to Garrett Stubbs (3-for-4). Colin Walsh walked to get on and Tyler White (2-for-3) singled before they both scored on Tucker's double. Jack Mayfield (3-for-4) walked to get on and eventually scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring in the top of the inning.
The Aces cut the Fresno lead to 4-2 when Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the first. Ildermaro Vargas (single) scored on Arcia's 24th home run of the season. It didn't take long for the Grizzlies to get the runs back when Tony Kemp (2-for-4) singled to get on and scored on a White sacrifice fly in the second. A.J. Reed (3-for-5) then crushed his team-leading 27th home run of the season in the third to increase the lead to 7-2. The two-run shot to left center scored Mayfield who doubled to get on.
That was the end of the night for Reno starter Anthony Banda. With Aces reliever Nick Baker on the mound, the third inning continued with the Grizzlies increasing their lead to 9-2. Stubbs singled to get on and scored on a Walsh RBI single before Rico Noel (single, 2-for-5) scored on another White sacrifice fly. Banda (7-7) suffered the loss for Reno, allowing the first eight runs on six hits and four walks. The lefty did not record a strikeout.
Mayfield doubled again for Fresno in the fourth before scoring on another Stubbs RBI to make the score 10-2. Reed and Stubbs each tallied their third RBI of the night in the sixth with singles to give the Grizzlies a 12-2 lead.
Grizzlies starter Cy Sneed (1-0) earned his first Triple-A win in his second appearance of 2017 and first quality start. He tossed 95 pitches through seven innings and allowed the two runs on just four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Fresno secured the win with two more homers in the top of the ninth. White hit his third home run in two games, a solo shot to left for his 24th of the season. Then, after a Tucker walk and a Mayfield single, Reed homered for the second time in the contest. It was the 13th two homer game for Fresno this season, Reed's second, and second such game in consecutive days. With the three-run bomb to right, Reed tallied six RBI on the night to tie Tucker for the club-high. It was also the third six-RBI game for a Grizz batter this season. For Mayfield, it was his fifth run scored in the contest, a new-season high for Fresno in 2017.
The Grizzlies face the Aces in a must-win series finale at Greater Nevada Field on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Mike Hauschild (6-2, 4.71) will be on the mound for Fresno to face Reno LHP Eric Jokisch (8-6, 4.24). The Grizzlies are 12-4 in Hauschild's starts this season.
