The Fresno Tacos (11-15) lost 5-4 to the Sacramento River Cats (9-16) in the opener of a four-game series on Taco Tuesday at Chukchansi park. Fresno moves to 0-7 in series openers this season.
The River Cats got themselves on the board first with a RBI double from Tim Federowicz and and a two-run single from Orlando Calixte (2-for-5) to take a 3-0 lead in the second. The Tacos cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single by Andrew Aplin (2-for-2) that scored Tyler White (3-for-4) and A.J. Reed who both singled to get on.
Sacramento regained a three-run lead in the fourth when Calixte tallied another RBI to score Kyle Blanks (2-for-3) who doubled and a sacrifice fly from Jae-Gyun Hwang scored Juan Ciriaco to make the score 5-2.
Tacos starter Brian Holmes' (0-2) night was done after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts after three and a third innings. Fresno relievers combined to allow no runs on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Fresno cut Sacramento's lead back to one in the fifth with Reid Brignac's third home run of the season. The two-run bomb was crushed to right and scored White who singled, making the final score 5-4.
Matt Reynolds (2-0) pitched two innings of relief for the River Cats allowing no runs on one hit and one walk with a strikeout, while starter Roberto Gomez went two and two thirds allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Ryan Webb earned his first save of the season.
The four-game series between Fresno and Sacramento continues Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. Probable starters are LHP Michael Roth (2-2, 4.08) for the River Cats and RHP Casey Coleman making his Grizzlies debut.
