GOT THE CALL: RHP Félix Peña was recalled to Chicago on May 5, marking the first big league call-up for an I-Cub this season. In the eighth days since, six players have gotten the call to join Chicago including LHP Rob Zastryzny (5/6), RHP Justin Grimm (5/7), INF Tommy La Stella (5/7), RHP Dylan Floro (5/8) and INF Jeimer Candelario (5/9). Pena, Candelario and La Stella remain in Chicago, while the stays for the rest of the group were brief.
TAKE A BOW: David Berg made his Iowa Cubs debut last night after a call-up from Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday. Berg allowed a single hit over 2.0 scoreless frames. He is the second pitcher to make his Triple-A debut for Iowa this season, behind Juan Paniagua, and is the first reliever to spin at least 2.0 scoreless frames in his debut since Gerardo Concepción on May 13, 2016.
BIG HITTER: This is the third series of the season in which Iowa is facing an American League affiliate and can use a designated hitter. Ian Happ, Stephen Bruno, Taylor Davis, Ali Solis, Jeimer Candelario and Tommy La Stella have all served as Iowa's DH in one or more games and combined, are 8-for-28 (.286).
GIVE ME THREE: Ian Happ notched his first three-hit game of the season last night, adding this to his seven two-hit games for eight multi-hit games. Happ tallied 11 three-hit games between Advanced-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Tennessee in 2016 with a career-high four-hit game on April 18 while with the Pelicans.
AGAINST SALT LAKE: This marks the only time the Bees and the I-Cubs will meet in 2017. Last season, the Bees took three of four at Principal Park. The two teams were even 4-4 over the last two seasons, but this follows a stretch of 11-straight losses for Iowa against Salt Lake (May 18, 2012-Aug. 19. 2014). John Andreoli went 3-for-11 in three games vs. the Bees in 2016 and added a triple and five RBI.
WALK IT OUT: Mark Zagunis is third in the PCL in walks (20), trailing Salt Lake's Kaleb Cowart (23) and Fresno's A.J. Reed (23). Zagunis has at least one walk in 17 of 28 games this season. His .202 batting average is second-to-last on the team ahead of Ali Solis (.154), while his .366 on-base percentage is fourth behind Victor Caratini (.392), Chris Dominguez (.387) and Bijan Rademacher (.379)
STOLEN DANCE: Salt Lake sits atop the league with 41 stolen bases, while Iowa sits in the basement with nine -- seven fewer than second-to-last Nashville and Memphis (16). The Bees' Kaleb Cowart individually matches Iowa's stolen base total and is in a four-way tie for first in the league. Ozzie Martinez was the last I-Cub to steal a base on May 2 at New Orleans. John Andreoli made the last out of last night's game with a caught stealing.
(ALMOST) GOING THE DISTANCE:Jake Buchanan spun 8.0 innings on Tuesday, the longest start for an Iowa Cub this season. The last Iowa Cub to last 8.0 innings in a start was Drew Rucinski on May 27, 2016 against Albuquerque. The I-Cubs only went 8.0 one other time last season as Ryan Williams matched the inning total on May 8 against Omaha.
RESET BUTTON: Chris Dominguez got off to a scalding start with Iowa, going 6-for-8 with two doubles and five RBI through his first two games after joining the team from extended spring on May 2. The 6'4" infielder went 0-for-16 with two walks and seven strikeouts over his next six games before getting back on track with a 3-for-4 game last night.
SHORT HOPS: Victor Caratini paces the PCL in grounded into double plays with 10...Taylor Davis is riding a five-game hit streak (5-for-18) and has reached base in 23 of 24 games for Iowa this season...Ian Happ is hitting .467 (7-for-15) in four games since returning from a DL stint (bruised left thumb) on May 7.
