SAN JOSE, Calif. – Brady Parker didn't allow a hit in six innings, and some splashy professional Grizzlies debuts backed him up with extra-base power, as Fresno opened its series at San Jose with a 7-2 win over the Giants on Tuesday night at Excite Ballpark.
The win moved the Grizzlies back into sole possession of first place in the California League North, one game ahead of San Jose.
Parker was the driving force of the night.
Armed with a one-run lead before he touched the rubber, the lefty worked six innings without allowing a hit, striking out six and walking four, and left the game with a 7-0 lead and nothing but zeroes on the board — a dominant start that set the tone for everything that followed.
He didn't have to do it alone.
Cort MacDonald, playing in his first professional game, tripled in the second inning and singled in the fourth, setting up Landyn Vidourek's RBI double that made it 3-0.
Daniel Jackson, the Golden Spikes Award winner also making his pro debut, reached on an error and stole a base in the third before Juan Martinez drove him in, then turned around a Fernando Vasquez pitch for a solo homer to left center in the fifth.
Jackson added a double in the eighth to finish 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI, while MacDonald finished 2-for-4 with the triple and the single.
Cristian Arguelles was all over the game as well. He doubled with two outs in the first and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, then singled home Ashly Andujar in the sixth and stole two bases on the night, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Fresno's offense kept adding on.
Martinez singled home Jackson in the third, and Vidourek's double in the fourth made it 3-0.
Jackson's homer in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-0, and Arguelles' RBI single in the sixth made it 5-0.
The Grizzlies delivered the knockout blow in the seventh.
Martinez doubled and Jesus Freitez followed with a double of his own to make it 6-0, and after a walk and a fielder's-choice groundout, Andujar's sacrifice fly brought home Freitez to cap a 7-0 lead — the last runs Fresno would need.
San Jose finally got on the board against reliever Wilmis Paulino, who relieved Parker to start the seventh.
San Jose tallied a solo shot in the seventh and squeaked across another run in the 8th but went down in order in the ninth as Paulino tallied his first Single-A save.
Fresno finished with 11 hits and eight walks as a team, with five different Grizzlies picking up multiple hits or extra-base knocks between Jackson, MacDonald, Arguelles, Martinez and Freitez, who also went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
The Grizzlies and Giants continue their series Wednesday at Excite Ballpark at 1pm. The broadcast is available on FresnoGrizzlies.com/listen beginning with the Chukchansi Gold Pregame Show at 12:45pm.
