SAN JOSE, Calif. – After never trailing throughout first 18 innings of the series, the Fresno Grizzlies never led Thursday night, falling 5-0 to the San Jose Giants at Excite Ballpark.
San Jose put the first run on the board in the opening inning, scoring an unearned run after a bunt was thrown away down the right field line and put Josuar Gonzalez in scoring positions before a sacrifice fly from Lorenzo Meola.
Ethan Cole and Austin Newton kept things from getting further out of hand for a while, but San Jose tacked on a run in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and another in the seventh on back-to-back doubles from Rod Barajas Jr. and Tanner Mally, extending the lead to 5-0.
Fresno's offense never found its footing against Ben Bybee and Ricardo Estrada, who combined for eight scoreless innings before Dylan Carter closed out the ninth.
The Grizzlies managed just five hits and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding six runners along the way.
The best chance came in the first, when Ashly Andujar singled and Landyn Vidourek walked, only for Daniel Jackson to line into an inning-ending double play when the runner strayed too far from second.
Juan Martinez was stranded at second in the fifth, and a two-on threat in the seventh died when Fresno couldn't come up with the hit it needed.
Martinez led the way offensively with two of Fresno’s five hits but San Jose’s pitching quieted the offense. The Grizzlies were shutout for the fourth time this year and second by the Giants.
It was Fresno's first loss of the series after taking the first two games, dropping the Grizzlies to 6-3 in games at San Jose this season.
Fresno still holds first place in the California League North's second half and looks to get back on track Friday night at Excite Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm. The Chukchansi Gold Pregame Show begins at 6:45pm on FresnoGrizzlies.com/Listen.
