Walks Undermine 15 Grizzlies' K's in 8-2 Loss

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Fresno Grizzlies' pitching staff struck out 15 Inland Empire batters Thursday night, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome eight walks and 12 hits allowed, as the Grizzlies fell 8-2 to the 66ers at San Manuel Stadium.

Inland Empire scored in four separate innings, aided repeatedly by free passes and a couple of wild pitches, with a three-run sixth and a two-run seventh doing most of the damage against the Fresno bullpen.

Offensively, hits were limited for the Grizzlies against Inland Empire starter Jack Bowery.

Fresno managed just six hits as a team and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight men on base.

Juan Martinez and Kyle Fossum were bright spots at the plate, each recording multi-hit nights — Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double, and Fossum finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Izeah Muniz struck out two in his inning of work while Marcos Herrera struck out 8 in 4.1 innings.

Tanner Sagouspe struck out three and recorded four outs, as one batter reached on a wild pitch, but did not allow a run in a scoreless eighth inning.

The strikeouts piled up on the mound, but the free passes proved too costly, and Fresno couldn't overcome the early deficit.

The Grizzlies remain in second place in the California League North as they continue the series Friday night at San Manuel Stadium at 6:35pm.
