SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Despite scoring first, the Fresno Grizzlies couldn't keep pace with an Inland Empire offense that hit three home runs, falling 10-5 to the 66ers on Sunday afternoon at San Manuel Stadium in the Grizzlies final road game of the regular season.
Fresno’s first run came in the second when Daniel Jackson scorched a ball to first that was ruled an error before he scored on a Juan Martinez double aided by a passed ball, giving the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead.
Inland Empire answered quickly, scoring in five different innings on a mix of home runs and small ball, with Estevan Moreno's leadoff shot in the second and a pair of doubles keying an early surge that built the 66ers a 4-1 lead by the third.
Jackson kept the Grizzlies within shouting distance, leading off the fourth with a solo homer to cut it to 4-2.
Inland Empire pulled away with a three-run fifth that made it 7-2 and put the game out of reach.
The Grizzlies didn't stop swinging as Carlos Renzullo scored on a Cort MacDonald single in the seventh.
Jack Natili blasted a solo homer in the eighth, and Ryan Niedzwiedz tripled and scored in the ninth on a Renzullo single.
But Inland Empire matched the Grizzlies blow for blow with home runs of their own from Starlin Aguilar and Dervy Ventura to keep the final margin at 10-5.
Yujanyer Herrera had a rough spot start, tagged for seven runs, while Austin Newton followed with 1.2 clean innings of relief to briefly steady things for the Grizzlies.
Natili and Jackson both went deep for Fresno, and MacDonald and Martinez each chipped in extra-base hits in a 10-hit night for the Grizzlies offense.
Despite the loss, Fresno splits the week-long series against Inland Empire and won the season series, taking seven of the twelve matchups.
Fresno also maintains a one-game lead on Stockton for the final playoff spot in the North Division heading into the final six games of the regular season.
The Grizzlies will welcome in the team they are battling to face, the San Jose Giants, for a six game series beginning Tuesday night at 6:50pm at Chukchansi Park.
