FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Grizzlies received a strong effort from their pitching staff but couldn't back it up on offense, falling 4-1 to the Visalia Rawhide on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park.
Luichi Casilla struck out six over three scoreless-by-rights innings to start the game, but a fielding error opened the door for a three-run rally for Visalia.
Yerald Nin scored on the play, and two batters later Pedro Blanco hit a two-run homer to make it 3-0 — all three runs charged as unearned.
Luke Hansel relieved Casilla in the fourth and was outstanding the rest of the way, working six innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven without issuing a walk.
That lone run came in the eighth, when Visalia strung together a hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch and a single before Victor Santana's double play still allowed the runner to score from third.
Fresno's only run came in the fifth.
Wilder Dalis, Ronny Ugarte and Carlos Renzullo hit three consecutive singles, with Renzullo's driving in Dalis to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Grizzlies had a couple more chances slip away in the middle innings.
Cristian Arguelles singled and stole second in the seventh but was left on base, and Landyn Vidourek reached in the eighth only to be erased on a fielder's choice.
Andujar, Dalis, Ugarte, Renzullo and Vidourek each finished with a hit, and Arguelles led the way with two, but Fresno's offense never found consistent traffic.
The Grizzlies didn't draw a single walk all night, grounded into two double plays and committed three errors — including the one that turned Casilla's clean start into a three-run inning.
Fresno finished 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded four runners, while Visalia's bullpen of Raul Garayzar and Julien Hernandez closed out the final three innings to secure the win for Dean Livingston.
Livingston was particularly sharp against Fresno, shutting out the Grizzlies for five innings without allowing a run, efficiently on 47 pitches.
The loss dropped Fresno to 59-48 but they remain in 1st place in the 2nd Half in the North.
With the Highway 99 Rivalry Series trophy already in tow, the Grizzlies close out the series against Visalia Sunday night at 5:05pm at Chukchansi Park.
