Game Recap | Hens top Indians, 5-3

Toledo OH, - The Toledo Mud Hens (66-70) defeated the Indianapolis Indians (66-71), on Saturday, September 5, in game five of the series. While both teams started the night with some pitching struggles, the Hens got into a rhythm and pulled ahead to lead the series 4-1. The Hens were outhit, 9-3, but outscored the Indians, 5-3.

Coming off a scoreless game four last night, the Hens had their sights set on redemption and the Indians were not going to let it be easy. Indianapolis tallied five hits in the opening inning which brought in three runs and the early lead (3-0).

Toledo earned three runs on no hits in their opener. The Hens loaded the bases, and Trei Cruz came home on an RBI-ground out for one (3-1), then Cal Stevenson came in on a fielding error soon after (3-2). Bases became loaded again which caused Indianapolis to switch arms. The tying run was walked in before the inning ended. (3-3)

The Indians came back with a bases loaded opportunity in the second but a sharp double play from James Outman in far-right field to Seby Zavala at home stopped the go-ahead run from coming in.

In the bottom of the fourth, Michael Siani ripped a double up the middle which set up Cruz for an RBI-single and the lead (4-3). Sawyer Gipson-Long then found his groove in the fifth, striking out a pair to end the inning.

Corey Julks kept it rolling in the home half of the fifth with a solo shot that flew 405ft off the bat out of the park. (5-3)

The Indians needed three for the win, but the Hens shut them out every inning after the first. The scoring concluded after Julks’s fifth-inning long ball and Toledo walked away just how they intended to, back on top.

The Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field on Sunday, September 6, as they look finish this home series on a high note before heading to Iowa for the final road trip of the season. First pitch is set for 6:05p.m. in T-Town.
