Game Recap | Hens top Saints in game two on the road

St. Paul, MN- The Toledo Mud Hens (59-68) snapped their five-game losing streak at the St. Paul Saints (73-54), winning 4-2, on Wednesday, August 26. The Hens struck first and stayed hot on offense which was highlighted by Max Anderson’s home run and Trei Cruz’s two RBI-doubles. Toledo’s defense executed four sharp double plays on St. Paul which helped them stay ahead from the first run to the last.

Following a quick 1-2-3 opening inning for the Hens, Justice Bigbie got the offensive ball rolling with a leadoff single in the second; Seby Zavala followed with the same. Three consecutive outs from the Saints defense shut out the Hens, Toledo returned the favor when St. Paul stepped up to bat.

Scoring started in the third when the visiting Hens put up a number off the swing of Trei Cruz. His RBI-double brought in the first of the day, then Max Anderson sent one out of the park for two more (3-0). The starting arm for Toledo, Austin Gomber, put together a 1-2-3-inning in the home half of that inning.

St. Paul got on the board in the fourth with an RBI-single that closed the gap to two. (3-1)

Toledo had the bases loaded with one away in the fifth but struggled to convert any runs. Gomber concluded his day with a strikeout after pitching 4.1 innings. Enmanuel De Jesus stepped in for the final outs of the frame and 1.2 total innings.

The second home run of the contest came from the opponent in the sixth. Walker Jenkins’s solo shot brought the Saints within one (3-2).

Cal Stevenson jumped in as pinch-hitter for John Peck in the eighth. After Bennett Lee drew a walk, Stevenson popped a single his first appearance at the plate. Cruz smashed his second RBI-double of the night and positioned the Hens back up by two (4-2). Stevenson stayed in the game at first; Anderson shifted to short stop.

The Hens held the lead going into the final half inning. Toledo stayed sharp and retired St. Paul in order, allowing them to walk away from game two victorious.

The Mud Hens return to CHS Field for game three at the Saints on Thursday, August 27, as they look to build on tonight's strong showing. First pitch is set for 8:07p.m.
