Adolis Garcia's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning rallied the Memphis Redbirds past the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 3-1 on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
The 'Cakes dropped two of three in the series and have lost eight of 13 games since the All-Star break.
Cody Poteet was dominant in his fifth Triple-A start, blanking Memphis on four hits over the first seven innings. He retired the first batter of the eighth, but was removed after allowing a single to Randy Arozarena. After R.J. Alvarez walked a batter and recorded the second out, Garcia launched his seventh home run in the last eight games and 23rd of the season to give the Redbirds the lead.
Chris Beck worked around a two-out single by Eddy Alvarez in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Alvarez provided the lone New Orleans run with an RBI double with two outs in the second inning to score Peter O'Brien, who had walked. After Redbirds spot starter Ryan Helsley exited in the third, the Memphis bullpen combined to limit the Baby Cakes to four hits over the final 6 2/3 innings, including 3 2/3 frames from Chris Ellis.
Junior Fernandez (1-0) sidestepped leadoff walks in the seventh and eighth innings to earn the victory.
Isan Diaz extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the third inning, when New Orleans loaded the bases with one out before Ellis struck out Lewis Brinson and O'Brien to escape the jam.
Poteet walked two and struck out three in his longest start since joining the 'Cakes on June 30. Alvarez (2-7) was his seventh loss, tied with Beck for the most among PCL relievers.
The Baby Cakes return home to open a three-game set against the Nashville Sounds on Friday at 7 p.m.
