CLINTON, IA (July 31, 2017) - Gareth Morgan has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for July 24-30. The Clinton LumberKings outfielder becomes the first LumberKing this season to win the League's award.
Morgan, 21, earned the honor with a torrid week at the plate that combined both power and speed. Over a five game stretch he batted .615 (6-for-13) and reached bases over 70 percent of the time he came to the plate. Known for his power, Morgan slugged two home runs during the run including a game deciding three-run home run on Sunday afternoon in Cedar Rapids that gave the LumberKings a 5-3 win. He drove in seven runs, drew five walks, and also stole two bases during the five-game stretch in which the LumberKings went 3-3.
MORGAN'S HOMER
Morgan became the first LumberKing during the 2017 season to win the Midwest League Player of the Week award and will be in tonight's starting lineup when the LumberKings play game three of the their four-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Left-handed pitcher Danny Garcia (6-8, 6.13) will take the ball for Clinton and face the Kernels left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes who will be making his Midwest League season debut. Game time is slated for 6:35 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:20 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
MORGAN ON DEFENSE
The LumberKings return to Ashford University Field on Saturday, August 5 with a four-game home stand against the Peoria Chiefs. Saturday and Sunday of the home stand feature giveaways before the game and Saturday's festivities will conclude with a post-game concert performance from Slough Boys.
