Mitch Garver homered three times, leading the Rochester Red Wings to an 8-2 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Sunday afternoon on Superhero Day at Frontier Field. The team will have the next three days off for the IL All-Star Break before heading to Lehigh Valley for an important four-game series that starts on Thursday
The Red Wings got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when ByungHo Park hit an RBI double off Syracuse starter Sean O'Sullivan, giving Rochester an early 1-0 lead.
Rochester quickly added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Ryan Strausborger and Engelb Vielma doubled in a run each, Mitch Garver hit a two-run home run, his tenth of the season, making it a 5-0 ballgame.
Syracuse cut into the deficit off Red Wings starter Justin Haley as an RBI single made the score 5-1 in the top of the third inning.
O'Sullivan was replaced to begin the bottom of the third inning. He pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 55 pitches - 37 for strikes.
Garver homered for a second time in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending his home run season total to 11 and the Red Wings' lead to 6-1.
Haley was relieved to begin the top of the fifth inning by Craig Breslow, who began a rehab assignment with Rochester.
The Red Wings starter finished with 4.0 innings of work, allowing one earned run on three hits, one walk and no strikeouts. He threw 64 pitches - 38 for strikes.
Breslow was replaced by Nik Turley to begin the top of the sixth inning after Breslow surrendered one run in one inning of work, cutting the Rochester lead to four and making the score 6-2.
Garver hit his third home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, his twelfth of the season, making it a 7-2 ballgame. No Red Wing had hit three home runs in a game since Park did on July 28 of last year.
Mason Melotakis came in to relieve Turley to begin the top of the eighth inning. Turley pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two. After recording one out and walking one in the inning, Michael Tonkin replaced Melotakis, and only needed two pitches to get Syracuse to ground out into an inning-ending double play.
Alex Wimmers retired the final two batters of the game for the Wings.

The Orioles, who had sold eight of their top players by August, finally dropped out of first place as Babe Ruth's Providence club charged to the IL pennant. Ruth would win 9 of 11 decisions with the Grays, going 23-8 overall in his only Minor League season, though he hit just .231 with one homer. He went on to hit 714 home runs with 2,213 RBI in 20 Major League seasons, earning a place among the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY in 1936.
