Andino delivers PCL's fifth cycle

Goes 5-for-6 with two RBIs in Albuquerque's 16-8 rout of New Orleans
August 22, 2008
It's the year of the cycle in the Pacific Coast League.

Robert Andino became the fifth PCL player to achieve the feat this season, going 5-for-6 with two RBIs in the Albuquerque Isotopes' 16-8 rout of the New Orleans Zephyrs at Isotopes Park on Thursday.

The 24-year-old shortstop tripled in the third inning, singled in the fourth, homered in the fifth, ripped an RBI double in the sixth and added another base hit in the eighth to pace the Isotopes' 20-hit attack.

"I forgot all about it," Andino said after completing the fourth cycle in franchise history and the first since Derek Wathan did it in 2004. "Then, when I hit the double, it clicked in my head that I had a cycle.

"If I had remembered and tried for it, I probably would've gotten out," he added. "It was a special night. It's something I'll always remember."

The Florida native's first career cycle was also his first five-hit game as a professional, though he did recall achieving both at Miami's Southridge High School.

Andino, who played in 40 games for the parent-club Marlins earlier this season, said he had no special approach for Thursday's game.

"It was the same as it is every day, try to see the ball and hit the ball," he explained. "Although I was seeing the ball pretty well coming out of the pitcher's hand."

Michael Ryan tripled and drove in three runs, Jai Miller belted his 18th homer and Tag Bozied collected four hits for the Isotopes (61-72).

"We're a good hitting team," Andino said. "We'll put some runs up."

Albuquerque starter Bob Keppel (8-11) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, despite allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts over five innings.

New Orleans' Bobby Parnell (1-2) surrendered six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout over 2 1/3 frames in his shortest outing in three PCL starts.

Michel Abreu fell a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs and Andy Green and Chris Aguila also homered for the Zephyrs (62-71).
