Gonzales Collects Multi-Hit Night as Sea Dogs Fall 5-2 to Reading

Portland, Maine - For the second straight night, excellent pitching from ) the Reading Fightin Phils (27-21)(58-59) proved too difficult for the Portland Sea Dogs (25-24)(60-57) to overcome, as they fell 5-2 in front of their third sellout crowd of the week.

Red Sox No. 2 prospect Justin Gonzales collected his second multi-hit game in his first three Double-A games, ripping a single and a triple throughout the night. He scored both of the Sea Dogs’ runs. Roman Anthony was one-for-three with a double and a sacrifice fly. Ronald Rosario and Yoeilin Cespedes also recorded hits.

Reading got off to a hot start in the first inning, as Phillies No. 5 prospect Bryan Rincon smashed a solo home run over the Maine Monster. Reading led 2-0 after the second, as a Luke Ritter groundout drove in Raider Tello.

In the fourth inning, Gonzales ran out a broken-bat infield single. Anthony doubled, which would have put runners on second and third, but an overthrow to third base allowed Gonzales to break for home, and he slid in safely under the tag for the Sea Dogs’ first run of the night.

Gonzales led off the sixth inning with a triple, before scoring on Anthony’s sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.

LHP Tyler Davis came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and gave up two runs to Reading. Carson DeMartini walked and scored on a Raider Tello double. Tello advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Ritter sacrifice fly.

In the eighth inning, Reading loaded the bases before DeMartini grounded out to first base, driving in Raylin Heredia, pushing the final score to 5-2.

Rosario hit a leadoff single in the ninth, but the Sea Dogs were retired in order after that.

RHP Evan Gates (2-4, 3.10 ERA), earned the win, allowing one run on one hit in 1.0 innings pitched. The loss went against LHP Tyler Davis (1-1, 5.06 ERA), who allowed three runs on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched. RHP Estibenzon Jimenez (S, 4) earned the save.

Tomorrow night, the Sea Dogs will take the field as the Maine Bean Suppahs, their fourth and final alternate identity night of the year. The legendary competitive eater Joey Chestnut will face the three top finishers in the Sea Dogs’ whoopie pie eating contest a few weeks ago in a bean suppahs eating contest. LHP Michael Sansone (3-3, 5.89 ERA) will face off against RHP Jean Cabrera (3-5, 7.48 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Delta Dental Park.
