The Fresno Grizzlies (21-30) knocked four home runs to shutout the Albuquerque Isotopes (27-23) 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Chukchansi Park. A quality start from Grizz starter David Martinez helped secure Fresno's second shutout of the season.
Martinez (2-6) did not allow a hit through four innings in his second quality start of the season in two consecutive games. He tossed 100 pitches in seven scoreless innings, his longest outing through eight starts. Martinez walked four batters and recorded eight strikeouts. The eight punch-outs were a personal-high for him in 2017.
The Grizzlies knocked their first home run of the game in the fifth to take an 1-0 lead over the Isotopes. A.J. Reed crushed a solo shot to right for his sixth homer of the season.
In the sixth, Derek Fisher (2-for-4) hit his team-leading 11th long ball of the season. The two-run bomb to left center scored Juan Centeno to make the score 3-0. Centeno singled to get on to extend his hit streak to 17 games, tied with Fisher for the club-high this season. It was Centeno's first game back with Fresno after playing two with Houston on May 23 and 25. The hit streak is one shy of the longest in the Astros affiliation era which occurred in 2015 by Joe Sclafani (18).
Fresno went deep again in the seventh to make the score 5-0. Max Stassi crushed his third home run of the season to right. The two-run knock scored Reed who walked to get on.
The Grizzlies accomplished their first combined four-home run game of the season in the eighth. Teoscar Hernández reached second on an error and Preston Tucker drove him home with a two-run shot to right. It was his eighth long ball of the season to make the final score 7-0.
Albuquerque starter Ryan Carpenter (2-4) took the loss in 6.2 IP, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Game three of the four-game series will be a 4:05 p.m. first pitch on Monday. The probable starters on Memorial Day are RHP Barry Enright (2-0, 4.32) for the Isotopes and RHP David Paulino (0-1, 4.50) for the Grizzlies.
