Guedez launches two homers, Locos rocket to 6-5 win

LANSING, Mich. – Breyson Guedez launched a solo home run in the third inning and a three-run shot in the seventh to power the Lansing Locos (20-28, 49-63) to a 6-5 win over los Perros Bomberos de Peoria (23-25, 55-59) on Tuesday night at JacksonⓇ Field™.

Lansing has won nine of its last ten home games.

After a quiet opening two innings from both dugouts, Guedez crushed his first High-A homer, a no-doubt 424-foot solo shot off starter Jack Martinez that exited the ballpark and bounced across Larch Street.

“It's just awesome to see a kid that is, he could be in school right now, and he's here with us and competing and putting up great numbers, so that's a great addition for us, and he has been for the last two weeks,” manager Javier Godard said.

Peoria took a 2-1 edge in the sixth on a Jalin Flores RBI single and a Tristen Bissetta RBI double, but Lansing struck back in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back two-out triples from Jake Reinisch and Dylan Fien, tying the game back up at 2-2.

In the seventh, C.J. Pittaro sent a single into center field, and Logan Sauvedrew a walk before Guedez hit his second home run of the night off reliever Nelfy Ynfante, a three-run bomb to right to give the Locos a 5-2 lead.

“As a player, when you're young and you're moving up the ladder pretty quick, that (a performance like this) gives you confidence, but it's also a fine line,” Godard said. “You have to be able to stay steady and just continue to put the work in and let everything develop.”

A Caden Ferraro two-run homer to right-center cut the Lansing lead to 5-4, necessitating insurance – supplied in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded Sauve hit-by-pitch.

Peoria rallied within one run again on an Anyelo Encarnación RBI single in the ninth before falling short.

In his fifth start of the season, with his parents in attendance, Tucker Novotny allowed three hits, two runs and two walks with eight strikeouts in 5 ⅔ innings before giving the mound to Luis Carrasco.

“It was kind of nice to finally pitch good in front of them,” Novotny said. “I don't think I've pitched good in front of them my whole professional career now, so it was good to do it well in front of them.”

In his last three starts, Novotny has a 2.55 ERA through 17 ⅔ innings pitched, allowing just five runs and five walks with 19 strikeouts.

“I think it's just kinda like just intent with stuff and kind of being aggressive and being on the offensive instead of being on the defensive,” Novotny said about keeping consistency moving forward. “The hitters gotta play to me instead of me playing to the hitters, and all that stuff.“

Novotny will receive a second start against Peoria on Sunday.

“In the sixth inning, they were kind of getting on me a little bit, and I think I'm gonna have to adjust, maybe not right away on them, but as the game progresses on Sunday, they might pick up on it a little quicker 'cause they've seen me now,” Novotny said.

Carrasco blanked Peoria for 1 ⅓ innings before Riley Huge fired an inning, allowing two runs, one hit and one strikeout. Abel Mercedes finished the game allowing one unearned run in the ninth.

Guedez led the offense with a 2-for-5 performance with two runs scored and four RBIs. Fien finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Reinisch went 1-for-4 with a triple to extend his on-base streak to 29 games.

Southpaw Jackson Nove is scheduled to make his second start for the Lugnuts on Wednesday, taking on Peoria lefty Cade Crossland. Gates open at 12 p.m. for a Summer Fun Day paired with a Dog Days of Summer, with dogs welcome at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05.
