AMARILLO, TX (August 25, 2026) -- The Amarillo Sod Poodles (29-23, 65-55) defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks (26-26, 57-64), 7-3, in six innings on Tuesday night at HODGETOWN. The full strength of the Soddies was on full display before the game was called early due to inclement weather, sealing an important victory amidst Amarillo’s push towards the postseason.
A pair of Hooks singled in the opening frame to put Soddies starter David Hagaman in an early bind, but the top-ranked pitching prospect was able to record back-to-back strikeouts to strand the runners and eliminate the scoring chance.
Two scorching hot Soddies teamed up to plate the first two runs of the night in the home half of the first. Cristofer Torin got it started with a one-out single and was followed by Avery Owusu-Asiedu who, in only his 13th game with the Sod Poodles, sent his ninth home run in an Amarillo uniform on a rocket to left field to clear the fence for a two-run shot and the lead.

After Corpus Christi recorded two quick groundouts in the bottom of the second, Danny Serretti went deep to left field on the first pitch he saw for a solo homer that extended the Amarillo advantage to three.
Hagaman caught Walker Janek looking at strike three to open the fourth inning to pick up his fifth strikeout of the night, but Jason Schiavone got a pitch he liked from the righty and hit a solo home run to right field to put the Hooks on the board. Despite the long ball, Hagaman picked up strikeouts number six and seven to retire the side.
The Soddies picked up their starter in the home half as Druw Jones walked and moved up to third on Ben McLaughlin’s single up the middle for a successful hit-and-run. Serretti stepped up to the dish and flied one down the left field line just deep enough for Jones to sprint home and dive in safely for the fourth Amarillo run of the evening.
In the following frame, Torin got in on the home run action by sending a two-run blast to left-center field on a breaking ball below the zone. Not long after, Jansel Luis collected his first hit of the night and scored on an Alberto Barriga double into the left field corner to make it a 7-1 ballgame.
Corpus fought back with another home run off the bat of Schiavone, a two-run shot that made it 7-3 in the top of the sixth. As the wind picked up and the rain started to fall, the tarp was put on the field and the game was ultimately called due to inclement weather, giving Amarillo the victory in the series opener.
POSTGAME NOTES
AOA-OK: With his first inning two-run homer, Avery Owusu-Asiedu extended his Sod Poodles hit streak to 13 games (8/11-c) and has also hit safely in each of his last 20 games (8/1-c) between High-A Hillsboro and Amarillo...his nine home runs in his first 13 games in Amarillo are the most by any Sod Poodle in any 13-game span this season...he is slashing .480/.557/1.160 since joining the squad on August 11 and his 23 RBI are the most in Double-A over that span.
NO CHEATING THE HAGAMAN: In only his fourth start with Amarillo, David Hagaman once again tied a career-high in strikeouts with 10 punchouts, the second time he has done so with the Soddies...his 32 strikeouts since his August 7 debut currently leads Double-A baseball.
