SCARBOROUGH, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 29th through May 5th.

Richmond Flying Squirrels outfielder Jacob Heyward has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 29th-May 5th. The 23-year old batted .389 (7-for-18) with three home runs, nine RBIs, four runs scored, three walks, and a .889 slugging percentage in five games for the Flying Squirrels last week. Heyward, who is a native of McDonough, Georgia, reached based in all five games he played in last week and collected multiple hits two times, including going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs in a 7-3 win at Bowie on Wednesday. With his performance last week Heyward raised his batting average to .340 for the Flying Squirrels this season. He also has four home runs, 12 RBIs, and 12 runs scored in 20 games this year. The 6'3", 215 lb. slugger tied for the league lead in home runs (3) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in slugging percentage (.889-2nd), OPS (1.343-2nd), RBIs (9-tied 2nd), total bases (16-tied 4th), batting average (.389-7th), and on-base percentage (.455-tied 7th). Jacob, who is the brother of Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 18th round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Miami.

Casey Mize, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Erie SeaWolves, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 29th-May 5th. The 6'3", 220 lb. hurler started two games for the SeaWolves last week and had a record of 2-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Mize, who is a native of Springville, Alabama, was promoted to Erie on April 25th and made his Double-A debut on Monday night at Altoona, throwing a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory for the SeaWolves. He struck out seven batters and walked one while throwing 70 of his 98 pitches for strikes. It was the first nine inning complete game no-hitter in the Eastern League since 2012. Casey made his second start of the week on Saturday against the visiting Bowie Baysox and gave up one unearned run on two hits while striking out four batters over five innings to earn the win in Erie's 6-1 victory. The 22-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in WHIP (0.21), batting average against (.045), innings pitched (14.0), complete games (1), and shutouts (1) last week and tied for the lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00). He also tied for fifth in strikeouts (11). Casey, who is rated by MLB.com as Detroit's top prospect and is rated 16th overall in Minor League Baseball, was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the first overall pick of the 2018 draft after putting together a record of 10-6 with a 3.30 ERA during his junior season at Auburn University.
