JACKSON, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, split a pair of contests with the Montgomery Biscuits on Wednesday, falling 4-0 in the completion of a suspended game before winning a seven-inning contest 5-1 at The Ballpark at Jackson.
The Generals (64-57) are down 2-1 in the current series with Montgomery (68-54), but they got strong pitching in the second contest to stay competitive with the division-leading Biscuits.
Game 1 (suspended game from August 1): Montgomery 4, Generals 0
Box Score
Picking up a scoreless game in the bottom of the second, the two sides remained in a 0-0 tie until a two-run home run from Montgomery's Michael Brosseau pushed the Biscuits ahead in the fourth. Taylor Widener (4-6, 3.01 ERA) worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing runs in the fifth and sixth as well before Michael Blazek entered in relief. Blazek and Miguel Aguilar held the Biscuits without a run over the final 2 2/3 innings, with both players maintaining a spotless August ERA in spite of the loss.
The Jackson offense was flummoxed by left-handers Dalton Moats, Matt Krook (3-2, 4.55 ERA), and Travis Ott (S, 3), with only Jason Morozowski recording extra-base hits. The Generals went 0-for-8 with men in scoring position and stranded eleven, as Jackson suffered its first shutout loss in more than a month. The West Tennessee bunch failed to score for the ninth time in 2018.
Game 2: Generals 5, Montgomery 1
Box Score
Pitching for the first time since going on the disabled list on July 27, right-hander Bo Takahashi threw four shutout frames in the nightcap, holding the Biscuits to a pair of hits while striking out three. Takahashi did not give up a walk or a home run, finishing his work on 49 pitches. In relief, Kirby Bellow and Kevin Ginkel (3-0, 2.14 ERA) each fired scoreless innings, with Ginkel striking out the side in the sixth. Ryan Atkinson allowed his first run as a reliever in 2018 in the seventh, but he completed the inning to secure the victory for the Generals.
Marty Herum and Josh Prince busted out the long ball for the Generals, with each player blasting his first homer in more than a month. Herum's solo shot in the second inning got Jackson on the board, and Prince singled home Dominic Miroglio three batters later to make the lead 2-0. Prince belted his fifth homer of the year in his second at-bat, upping the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning, while Miroglio doubled in a pair of two-out runs in the fifth for insurance. Prince stole his eleventh base of the year in the win.
