Hickory, NC- The Augusta GreenJackets got a two-run homer in the sixth inning from Nick Montgomery, claiming a 3-2 win over the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday night at LP Frans Stadium.
The third matchup of the series endured a ninety minute-plus rain delay as storms whipped through the Unifour just shy of the scheduled 7pm first pitch.
When play began, Evan Siary got the start for the Crawdads against Augusta starter Davis Polo.
Siary made his first start since being awarded Carolina League Pitcher of the Month for July, as the right-hander went 2-0 for the month over a span of 19.2 innings pitched. Siary finished July with an earned run average below one, striking out a league-leading twenty-seven batters versus five walks allowed.
Augusta took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, as Juan Mateo singled to right, scoring Caden Merritt.
Both starters were sterling through four frames, as the two combined for nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits.
In the sixth, Augusta upped their lead to 3-0 as Montgomery launched his seventh dinger of the season off Crawdads reliever Ben DeTaeye.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Crawdads responded with a pair of runs to trim the lead to 3-2. Kolby Branch singled down the right field line, scoring Paulino Santana and Pablo Guerrero.
Davis Polo tossed six innings, garnering a quality start, allowing two runs, while striking out five Crawdads' batters.
Daniel Brooks came on in relief for Augusta, throwing three perfect innings, striking out six Crawdads en route to his third save of the season.
Davis Polo took the win for Augusta (57-46, 22-15), upping his mark to 6-5 on the year, while Evan Siary (4-3) suffered the loss for Hickory (61-41, 27-11).
Paulino Santana led the Crawdads offense with three hits, including a double, a run scored, and a steal of second in the fourth inning.
The Crawdads will continue the series on Friday as Mason McConnaughey toes the slab for Hickory, facing off against Augusta starter Landon Beidelschies. First pitch at the Frans is set for 7pm.
