Hillsboro, OR. (December 6, 2017) - The Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) announced their 2018 field staff today. Hops 2017 manager Shawn Roof (@shawnroof4) will return in the same capacity, Mike Parrott will serve as pitching coach for the third consecutive season, Micah Franklin will join Hillsboro as hitting coach, Carlos Mesa will serve as an additional coach, and Ben Petrick will return as a consultant.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to manage the Hops in 2018. Hillsboro is a first-class organization and we have some of the best fans in Minor League Baseball. Last year was a great experience and I can't wait to put on a Hops jersey again," said Shawn Roof.

Roof is in his third season with the Arizona Diamondbacks Player Development Staff, and returns for his second year as manager of the Hops. In his first season, the Hops finished with an overall record of 41-35 and were champions of both halves in the Northwest League's two-half format. Diamondbacks' 2017 top draft selections Pavin Smith, Drew Ellis and Daulton Varsho all began their careers playing for Roof.
Parrott will return to the Hops for his third consecutive season as pitching coach and is in his 22nd season with the Diamondbacks. Parrott pitched parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball with Baltimore (1977) and Seattle (1978-81). Under Parrott, Hillsboro has never finished outside of the top 3 in Team Earned Run Average.
Franklin will be making his debut in Hillsboro as hitting coach in 2018 and is in his second season with the D-backs in a coaching capacity. Prior to joining Arizona, Franklin served as a pro scout for the Seattle Mariners from 2014-16. Franklin enjoyed a 15-year professional playing career and in 1997, appeared in 17 games for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Mesa is in his second season as a coach with the D-backs and his first with the Hops. In 2017, he served as the Outfield, Baserunning and Hitting Coach for the Dominican Summer League D-backs. Mesa played in the minor leagues with the Boston Red Sox from 2014-16 and Pittsburgh Pirates from 2011-13.
Petrick returns to the Hops for his sixth season as a on-field consultant and is the only person who has been with Hillsboro for each season of its existence. Petrick, a Hillsboro native, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000 and played most of his career with the ailment. He played 5 Major League seasons with the Colorado Rockies (1999-2003) and Detroit Tigers (2003).
In addition to the coaching staff, Michael Powell will join Hillsboro as Athletic Trainer, and Tim Queck will serve as Strength and Conditioning Coach.
"We're thrilled to have Shawn, Mike and Ben back for the 2018 season and are excited to welcome Micah, Carlos, Michael and Tim to Hops Nation. The Diamondbacks always send fantastic staffs and 2018 will be no different," said Hops President K.L. Wombacher.
