The Hillsboro Hops and Boise Hawks finished off the regular season Sunday night in a game with no postseason implications.
Alec Byrd and three relievers limited the Hops to four hits in a 5-0 win. The Hawks had been knocked out of postseason contention the previous night in a 14-7 loss to Hillsboro. The Hops still won the Northwest League South Division second-half title by a game over Eugene following the Emeralds' 11-1 loss to Salem-Keizer.
Hillsboro will open the postseason Tuesday night at Eugene with game one of a best-two-out-of-three series. Game two will be at Tonkin Field Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. with game three also in Hillsboro if necessary.
Austin Bernard homered to right to put Boise on the board in the second inning. The Hawks took advantage of a pair of Hillsboro errors in the third, stringing together three consecutive, two-out singles to plate three more runs in the third inning.
Hops startering pitcher Tyler Vail surrendered seven hits and five runs over five innings. Just two of the runs were earned.
Bernard and Danny Edgeworth each had two hits for Boise. Camden Duzenack and Tim Susnara each doubled for the Hops.
Pavin Smith and Daulton Varsho each went 0-for-3 for the Hops, falling short in their pursuit of a NWL batting title. The honor went to Salem-Kezier RF Logan Baldwin, who finished the season with a .342 mark, Smith finishing third at .323 and Varsho fifth (.316). Varsho did top the league in slugging pct. at .534.
Tune in for live coverage of game one of the divisional playoff series Tuesday night on RIp City Radio 620 AM with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. and first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
