The day started with excitement - it was the debut of the Arizona Diamondbacks 1st round selection Pavin Smith and the first televised game of the season on Comcast Sportsnet Northwest - but it ended solemnly as the Hops fell to the Boise Hawks 5-1 following a shaky defensive performance.
The Hops and Hawks entered tonight's series with matching 4-4 records atop the Northwest League South Division. Tyler Keele got the start for Hillsboro and was solid himself. Unfortunately the Hops were sloppy in the field leading to extra opportunities for the offense. He worked through the first inning 1-2-3 but ran into trouble in the second.

Following a one-out walk, the Hops made errors in the field on four of the next six hitters. By the time the dust had settled, two runners had come across to stake the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.
Boise tacked on two more to make it a 4-0 lead when Danny Edgeworth popped a homer to right to score Daniel Jipping, who had reached on yet another error.
All said and done, the Hops committed five errors in the field, and only one of the five runs permitted by Hops pitchers was earned.
There was some excitement however. Two players made their professional debuts for the Hops in the loss. First-round pick and seventh overall selection in the 2017 MLB Draft Pavin Smith started as the Hops' designated hitter and finished 0-3 with a walk. Ninth-round selection Camden Duzenack also debuted and logged his first pro hit when he doubled down the left-field line in the eighth inning.
The lone Hops run came across in the eighth when Billy Endris bounced one to second to plate Connor Owings, who had singled earlier in the frame.
Tomorrow is the second of three with Boise here at Ron Tonkin Field. First pitch will be at 7:05 on Rip City Radio 620 AM with pregame beginning thirty minutes prior.
