MEMPHIS – Bennett Hostetler (7) notched his second multi-home run game of the season Sunday afternoon as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp defeated the Memphis Redbirds 6-2 to conclude the season series against the first half International League champions at AutoZone Park.
The first Hostetler homer arrived in the fourth against Memphis (69-57, 22-29) starter Josh Fleming (L, 4-7) after Brayden Taylor tripled, giving Jacksonville (63-61, 21-20) a 4-1 lead.
With two outs in the sixth, Taylor walked, setting up Hostetler’s second longball to push the advantage to 6-1.
Memphis threatened to tie the game in the eighth. The Redbirds loaded the bases on singles from Victor Scott II and Thomas Saggese and a walk from Leo Bernal. Cesar Prieto singled to score Scott II and set the final margin at 6-2. Jacksonville reliever Jake Walkinshaw retired the next two batters to leave the bases loaded.
Stephen Jones authored a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down Jacksonville’s fourth win in the six-game series.
Memphis staked an early lead in the second inning when Brody Moore was hit by a pitch with two outs, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a wild pitch.
Jacksonville took the lead for good in the top of the third. Can Cannarella provided a two-out to double to set the stage for Jonathon Long’s (13) first Marlins organizational home run, a 447-foot two-run shot to left that put Jacksonville ahead 2-1.
Luis Palacios (W, 3-1) provided five innings and yielded just one unearned run in his fourth start for Jacksonville, and relievers Dax Fulton and Zach Pop combined with Walkinshaw and Jones to provide four innings of one-run relief.
