Indians Fall to I-Cubs 5-3 in Extra Innings

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Indians were defeated by the Iowa Cubs, 5-3, in an afternoon battle that went ten innings at Victory Field. Starting pitcher Connor Wietgrefe became just the third pitcher in the the Pirates farm system to reach 100 strikeouts this season. He started on the mound and struck out six batters in his 6.0 innings.

The I-Cubs (14-21, 44-63) scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning when Ben Cowles hit a ground ball single into left field. Indianapolis (22-13, 53-57) responded with a run of its own later in the fourth inning when a throwing error by the I-Cubs allowed Mitch Jebb to score and tie the game at 1-1.

After another throwing error in the sixth inning allowed the Indians to take the lead, Hayden Cantrelle and Owen Ayers both hit line drive singles to put Iowa back on top 3-2 in the seventh inning.
The Indians once again retaliated later in the bottom of the seventh when Joshua Palacios sent a line drive double to right field to even the score at 3-3. Owen Ayers and Owen Miller knocked in go-ahead runs for Iowa in the tenth inning.

MLB rehabber Edward Cabrera pitched first for the I-Cubs and allowed one run in his 4.0 innings. Jordan Wicks (W, 1-9) pitched the final 3.1 innings and did not allow a run to pick up his first win of the season.

The six-game series between the Indianapolis Indians and Iowa Cubs continues on Thursday night with first pitch set for 6:35 PM. Thomas Harrington (1-6, 6.48) will take the mound for the Indians and Connor Noland (2-4, 6.19) for the Cubs.
