Clinton, IA (April 10, 2018) - Home runs from Ariel Sandoval and Johnny Adams and strong pitching were enough for the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday afternoon at Ashford University Field to top the Wisconsin Timber Rattler 5-1. Ryne Inman contributed the longest start by a LumberKing (3-2) this season to collect his first win of the year.
Inman (1-0) made his LumberKings debut and impressed over his 5.2 inning outing. The righty limited the Timber Rattlers (2-3) to a Pat McInerney solo home run in the sixth to pitch the LumberKings to a rebound win following Monday night's loss.
Sandoval commenced the scoring for Clinton in the bottom of the first inning. The LumberKings outfielder slugged his Midwest League leading fourth home run of the season to give Clinton a lead they would not relinquish.
In the bottom of the second, Johnny Adams hooked a ball down the left field line that stayed just fair for his first home run of the year. The Pair of early home runs off Timber Rattlers starter Christian Taugner staked the LumberKings to a 2-0 lead.
Taugner (0-1) ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fourth inning after setting down the first two batters. Adams singled with two out and was chased home when Ryan Costello doubled to left for the LumberKings third run of the day.
The game was put out of reach in the in the bottom of the sixth when the LumberKings broke through for two more runs. Three consecutive singles to lead off the inning loaded the bases for Clinton who looked as though they would be turned away with nothing to show following a double play ball that cut a LumberKing baserunner down at the plate. With two out, and runners at second and third, Greifer Andrade singled up the middle to score two and put Clinton in front 5-1.
Following Inman's strong start, Adonis De La Cruz and David Gerber combined to shutout the Timber Rattlers over the final 3.1 innings. De La Cruz earned his first hold of the season for his 2.1 innings of relief work.
The LumberKings will now host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for game three of their four-game series at Ashford University Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM with gates opening at 110AM. The LumberKings will throw left-handed pitcher Nick Wells (1-0, 3.60) while the Timber Rattlers will counter with right-handed pitcher Carlos Herrera (0-0, 0.00).
