NASHVILLE, TN - Jason Vosler provided the Fourth of July fireworks with a three-run blast and the Iowa Cubs (30-54) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds (39-44), Wednesday at First Tennessee Park.
Alec Mills (4-8) gave up two runs on a Ramón Laureano homer in the first, but was nearly untouchable after the opening frame. The righty bounced back from four-straight losses on the bump to spin a quality start as he scattered six hits through 6.0 innings and didn't give up a run after the first. He walked one and whiffed five.
Iowa cracked the scoreboard in the second as a Nashville error put Trey Martin on with no outs. Martin sped to third on a Bijan Rademacher single and touched home with a Wynton Bernard groundout.
The floodgates opened in the fifth as Iowa put up a four-run inning to take the lead. Jacob Hannemann got the lineup going with a single, moved to second on a balk and the I-Cubs cornered the situation on a Chesny Young single. With two outs, Iowa rallied as Ryan Court punched in one with a single and Vosler followed with a three-run blast, his third with Iowa.
Young batted a run in the sixth to pad Iowa's edge. He ended his night 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Hannemann boosted the offense with a 2-for-3 game.
Carl Edwards Jr. made his third rehab appearance with Iowa, lasting 0.2 innings and allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one and hitting a batter. Alberto Baldonado and Dakota Mekkes made up the balance of Iowa's scoreless relief effort.
