IronPigs rally to defeat Wings 9-5

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored six runs with two outs in the fifth inning, topping the Rochester Red Wings 9-5 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. It was the 11th straight win for the first place IronPigs; the teams meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., another $1 Wednesday with $1 Zweigle's hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack.

The Red Wings took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Zack Granite got things started with a lead-off double against IronPigs starter Ben Lively. Granite scored after an RBI single from Bengie Gonzalez, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Wings put together three straight singles from Engelb Vielma, Granite and Gonzalez. Gonzalez's hit scored Vielma, making the score 2-0. With two runners on, Daniel Palka hit a three-run opposite field home run to give the Wings a 5-0 advantage. It was Palka's team-leading sixth home run on the season, and his first homer since April 26 (19 games).
LHP Adalberto Mejia got the start for the Wings. He gave up only one hit in three innings and had one strikeout while throwing 33 pitches (22 strikes).
Nick Tepesch came into the game to start the fourth inning. He got himself into early trouble by hitting Cameron Perkins and giving up a ground-rule double to J.P.Crawford. After loading the bases, Tepesch limited the damage by striking out Jorge Alfaro, giving up a sacrifice fly to Rhys Hoskins making the score 5-1, and striking out Nick Williams.
Tepesch got into a bases-loaded, no out jam in the fifth inning, then got a strikeout and pop out while trying to escape trouble. With two outs, Alfaro then hit a bases clearing double to make the score 5-4. Dylan Cozens followed by hitting his IL-leading tenth home run of the year giving the IronPigs their first lead of the game 6-5. That put an end to Tepesch's evening; of the six runs charged to Tepesch, just one was earned after an error earlier in the inning by Vielma. D.J. Baxendale entered the game and gave up a triple by Hoskins on a misplayed ball by right fielder Niko Goodrum. Hoskins scored on a wild pitch, giving the 'Pigs a 7-5 lead.
Lively settled down and kept the Red Wings off the bases for three straight innings. Lively worked six innings and gave up six hits and five earned runs. He struck out five, and threw 86 pitches - 63 for strikes.
Trevor Hildenberger pitched the eighth inning, giving up two runs which extended the Lehigh Valley lead to 9-5. Buddy Boshers worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.

1980 - Rochester infielder Len Sakata extended his hitting streak to 14 games, raising his batting average to a team leading .380. Sakata had a double, a single, and a stolen base the Wings 7-0 shutout of Charleston.
2005 - The Rochester Red Wings stole the victory from the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Red Barons in a Monday matinee at Frontier Field, 7-6. Luis Rodriguez slapped the game-winning single over a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Jason Tyner from third. Todd Dunwoody had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly, scoring Brent Abernathy to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth off of Barons reliever Martire Franco (2-1). Garrett Jones extended his hitting streak to a Red Wings season high 12 games with a single in the fourth...The three home runs hit by the Red Wings tied their season high as they also hit three against Pawtucket on April 27...Abernathy extended his hitting streak to seven games.

2005 - Chad Gaudin of Syracuse enters of the 9th inning of his start against Columbus hoping to become the fifth pitcher in League history to record a 9-inning perfect game. The visiting Clippers spoil the moment for Gaudin and the crowd at Alliance Bank Stadium, as Ryan Hankins lines a base hit into left field to lead off the 9th. Gaudin promptly retires the next three hitters to complete the onehit shutout and give Syracuse a 3-0 victory.

1939- The first A.L. night game is played at Shibe Park, with Cleveland beating the host Philadelphia Athletics 8-3 in ten innings.
1957- The Yankees celebrate Billy Martin's 29th birthday in a raucous fashion. An ensuing fight at Manhattan's Copacabana Club leads to $5,500 in fines and the eventual trade of Billy to Kansas City. Hank Bauer allegedly starts the fight by hitting a patron, although Bauer denies it.
1987- After starting off with an 18-2 record, the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers drop their tenth in a row, losing 13-0 to Kansas City, and earning the nickname Team Streak. The Brew Crew's only hit off Charlie Leibrandt is a bunt single.
1997- Jim Leyland returns to Pittsburgh for the first time wearing a uniform other than that of the Pirates. Leyland, who spent 11 seasons as skipper in Pittsburgh, sees his new team, the Marlins, beat the Pirates, 3-1. Two days later he leaves town with Florida's first-ever sweep in Pittsburgh.
