Albuquerque, N.M. - The Albuquerque Isotopes overcame a six-run deficit and scored six runs between the eighth and ninth innings, including two runs on a two-out throwing error in the ninth inning to beat the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 9-8, Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.
The Dodgers led 8-2 in the top of the fifth inning and took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning when the Isotopes scored four runs to make it a one-run game. Albuquerque (24-22) notched five hits in the inning, including a pinch-hit, two-run double by Collin Feguson, and a two-out RBI single by Mike Tauchman. After Tauchman singled, he was caught stealing second base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dodgers pitcher Brandon Morrow struck out the first two batters. Dustin Garneau came up next and faced a 1-2 count, but he ended up drawing a walk. Morrow then hit Rafael Ynoa with a pitch to put two runners on base.
On a full count pitch to Daniel Castro, Castro sent a dribbler up the first base line. Morrow fielded the ball, but his throw to first base was wide and went into right field. Both Garneau and Ynoa scored to give the Isotopes the win.
The loss ended OKC's four-game winning streak. Although they are 4-2 halfway through their current road trip, both losses have been in games in which the Dodgers (25-19) led by at least five runs. Wednesday's defeat also marked the team's second loss this season when leading after eight innings.
The Dodgers controlled the first half of the game, and O'Koyea Dickson opened the scoring in the second inning. He jumped on the first pitch from Barry Enright and hit it just below the scoreboard in left-center field, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
The Isotopes evened the score in the third inning. Enright led off with a double and later scored on a two-out double by Tauchman to make it 1-1.
But the Dodgers quickly answered and regained the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. After Dickson walked, Trayce Thompson tripled off the right-center field fence. Max Muncy followed with a RBI single, putting OKC ahead, 3-1. Willie Calhoun finished the rally with a two-out RBI single.
A defensive miscue allowed the Isotopes to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. With two on and one out, Muncy mishandled a grounder hit by Castro, allowing a run to score. Following the error, the Isotopes had runners at second and third, but Trevor Oaks got a groundout and a flyout to keep the Dodgers ahead 4-2.
The Dodgers doubled their run total in the fifth inning, as both Dickson and Farmer swatted two-run homers. Wednesday marked Dickson's second multi-homer effort within his last four games and third multi-homer game of the season.
Farmer finished 2-for-4, collecting a double in addition to his home run. He's off to a 4-for-8 start with OKC, and over his last 12 games between OKC and Tulsa, he's tallied 25 hits.
Tauchman hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to cut OKC's lead to 8-3. He was the offensive leader for the Isotopes Wednesday, going 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI.
For the second time this road trip, Oaks left the game after six innings with a lead, but settled for a no decision. Oaks allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
Instead the win went to Isotopes reliever Matt Carasiti (1-0), who struck out all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning.
Morrow (0-5) took the loss and was charged with his second blown save of the season.
