Tacoma, WA. - The Reno Aces fell to Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. Aces starter Jake Buchanan had his best start of the season, delivering 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit. Ildemaro Vargas led things offensively for the visiting Aces, finishing 2-for-4 with a RBI single. Jimmie Sherfy gets the loss, his first of the season.
Buchanan retired the first five Rainiers he faced Sunday afternoon. The right-hander out of North Carolina State University was dominant throughout the day. After allowing a full-count walk to Tacoma's Danny Muno, Buchanan retired 10 consecutive Tacoma batters en route to seven shutout innings. His start ties his Aces record of longest outing and breaks his season record for least amount of hits allowed in a start.
Reno threatened in the top of the third inning. Vargas hit his 30th double of the season with two outs to bring up Jack Reinheimer who was in search of his 600th career MiLB hit. Reinheimer drove the second pitch of the at bat through the infield, but Vargas was gunned down at home trying to score. The Aces got into the scoring column in the top of the 5th inning. Kristopher Negrón got the inning started with a single to former Reno outfielder Mitch Haniger. Ildemaro Vargas laced a two-out single to right field, scoring Negron and giving Reno the first run of the ballgame.
Buchanan and Erik Davis would hold Tacoma scoreless through eight innings before passing the ball to Jimmie Sherfy in the 9th. Sherfy recorded two quick outs before allowing a soft line drive to Zach Shank for a single. Gordon Beckham was drilled with a 95 MPH fastball to put runners at first and second for Danny Muno. Muno worked a full count before skying a fly ball into left field. Reinheimer and Zach Borenstein converged on the ball but came up empty handed allowing two runs to score.
The loss moves Reno to a record to 68-53 on the season, good for second place in the Pacific Coast League Northern Division. The Aces face Tacoma one more time before heading back to Greater Nevada Field August 15th. Tickets are on-sale now at www.renoaces.com or by calling (775) 334-4700.
