BELOIT, WI (July 3, 2019) - The Clinton LumberKings won their eighth game of their last 10 with a 3-2 win over the Beloit Snappers on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. Thomas Jones homered in the game as Clinton (8-5, 41-41) completed a mini two-game series sweep of the Snappers (2-10, 29-51).
The LumberKings were the first team to score. Snappers starter Joe DeMers retired the first five batters he faced - three by way of the strikeout - but then allowed a two out single to J.D. Osborne. Thomas Jones then came up and lined a home run just over the wall in left for his seventh of the season and 2-0 LumberKings lead.
DeMers (1-3) was given the loss for a four inning start in which he allowed two runs on two hits while walking none and striking out five.
Clinton then led from the second inning on, and were unphased by a rain storm that forced a one hour and seven minute delay with two out in the bottom of the fourth.
The rains did bring about the end of the night for LumberKings starter Jake Walters who was followed by Cam Baird.
In the bottom of the sixth, Beloit plated their first run of the night to pull to within one. Baird (1-0) allowed the first batter of the inning to reach on a throwing error by Christopher Torres. Three batters later, Santis Sanchez doubled to right center field for an RBI.
Baird earned the win for Clinton - his first of the year - on 1.1 innings of relief work. He allowed one unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.
The LumberKings scored what proved to be the game's decisive run in the top of the eighth inning. Peyton Burdick drew a one-out walk and eventually scored on a Will Banfield single through the left side of the infield.
Beloit pulled to within one in the bottom of the eighth when LumberKings pitching issued four walks to force home a run.
Zach Wolf then rebounded to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth and was awarded his fifth save of the year.
The LumberKings will now head home for a brief two-game homestand with the Peoria Chiefs that begins on Thursday the Fourth of July! Clinton will throw righty Tyler Jones (2-4, 2.14) while Peoria will tap righty Michael Baird (0-0, 0.00).
