I-Cubs Even Series With 3-1 Victory

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (39-48) evened the series against the Buffalo Bisons (45-43) at two wins apiece with their 3-1 victory on Friday night at Principal Park.

The game started off with a one-two-three inning on either side before the offense kicked off in the second. Buffalo struck first in their half of the inning with a double and two singles, bringing in the first run of the game and taking a 1-0 lead.

Iowa stranded two runners in the second inning and one in the third before finally cashing in in the fourth inning. Jackson Frazier and Jared Young started off the inning with back-to-back singles, and then Greg Deichmann launched a three-run home run to give the I-Cubs a 3-1 lead.

Outside of the second, Iowa starter Matt Dermody was locked in against Buffalo. He limited the Bisons to six hits over five innings of work and did not issue a single walk. Dermody turned the game over to Sean Newcomb in the sixth, and he picked up right where Dermody left off. Newcomb allowed just one hit and two walks in three innings of work.

Buffalo’s bullpen was also effective. Starter Thomas Hatch left after a six-inning quality start, and two relievers combined to allow just one hit over the next two innings, leaving the score at 3-1 entering the ninth.

Erich Uelmen was up to the job for Iowa, pitching around a single to secure the victory by a final score of 3-1.

POSTGAME NOTES:

• Jackson Frazier extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games, which matches his career high at Triple-A.
• Matt Dermody completed five innings and picked up the win for the second consecutive start. He is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA (5ER/28.1IP) over his last six outings.
• Greg Deichmann went 2-for-3 and drove in all three of the I-Cubs runs tonight. It is his fifth game of the season with three or more RBI.
• Erich Uelmen secured his sixth save of the season, which leads the team.
